OLD MAN AND HIS BIKE
This picture shows the effect of restricted depth of field. ( It
is a medium res image, as are most of the IFF files, but can be
changed to low or high res. in your own paint program.)
The shot was taken on FP4 film rated at 200 ISO and a monopod was
used to support the camera as the lens was a 300 mm. mirror.
Support is absolutely necessary as it is virtually impossible to
hold such a long focal length lens still at any but the fastest
shutter speeds.
Mirror lenses are not common, but are a relatively cheap way of
getting a long lens. There are quite a few problems though,
including the lack of aperture control and, often, quite low
contrast. They also damage easily.
Focusing must also be totally accurate as the lens has a fixed
aperture of F5.6, so, at about 30 feet, only a few inches would
be sharp. In this case it can be seen from the fence posts that
only the posts immediately infront and behind the man approach
sharp. The others are very blurred.
The original print is sharp over only about a 6 inch depth. The
man`s hat is sharp, clearly showing the pattern.
As an aside, I didn`t notice that his shirt tale was out until I
made the print, and that is one of the most eye catching points.
